ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF

Definition:
Under general direction from the Fire Chief, plans, organizes, coordinates and administers all functions and activities of the Valley Ford
Fire Department’s daily operations, and performs other duties as required or assigned.

Class Assignment:
This management classification assists the Fire Chief in managing activities throughout the Fire Departments initial response and
surrounding areas to provide fire prevention, suppression, emergency medical, hazardous materials and rescue response as well as
related services to the public.

Essential Functions (Examples):
Assumes the role and responsibilities of Fire chief in his/her absence, including applying departmental policies and procedures regarding
personnel issues, department commitments and meeting with various entities regarding related issues; ensures that the departmental
budget is being expended as directed by policy and board direction; evaluates and reviews work for acceptability and conformance with
departmental standards; coordinates with operations captain to maintain appropriate staffing levels; drafts and submits standard
operating procedures and policies; provides command and control at incidents occurring in the initial response area; maintains effective
working relationships with other fire departments and outside agencies, organizations, groups and officials; attends meetings,
conferences, workshops, trainings to become and remain familiar with practices, developments and trends that effect the fire service;
functions as Duty Chief for the Department and neighboring agencies, as required; other duties as assigned for designated.

Qualifications:
The Knowledge of principles and practices of a rural fire administration, including, but not limited to suppression, prevention,
investigation, as well as staff supervision, organized management practices and accounting procedures is highly desirable. A familiarity
with California State Fire standards, codes and local laws is preferred. A good understanding of basic computer applications and
functions is also required.

The Ability to supervise, train, motivate, and evaluate the staff; administer departmental goals and objectives and effective leadership
abilities in the area of fire suppression, emergency medical, hazardous materials operations and prevention activities is desirable.

Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
Required:
       Residence within 30 minutes of Valley Ford
       Valid California Class C driver’s license (with Firefighter endorsement within 6 months)
       California Title 22 medical or higher certification
       California State Firefighter One certificate
Desired:
       Residence within the western zone 8 area
      EMT-1 Certification, with De fibrillation Certificate
       California State Certified Fire Officer or Command 1A/1B, Fire Instructor 1A/1B,
    Investigation 1A, Management 1, Prevention 1A/1B, ICS 300 (minimum)
• First Responder Operations/Decontamination, Hazmat (within one year)

Working Conditions
This position is required to be on call on evenings, weekends, and holidays and monitor radio traffic on a 24 hour basis, as assigned.
The Assistant Chief will be required to attend bi-weekly training, monthly staff and Board of Director meetings, and other meetings as
assigned, within and surrounding, Sonoma County. Emergency response often requires late night response or a response in inclement
weather or during natural or other occurring disasters.

Selection Process
The most qualified candidates will be invited to a written as well as practical examination and panel interview. The candidates selected
after this process will then participate in an interview with the Fire Chief.
